What this drywall planner does
BuildPlot’s Drywall Layout Planner places real 4×8, 4×9, 4×10 or 4×12 sheets on each wall and the ceiling. Every sheet is clipped to the surface and subtracted where a door, window or custom opening cuts through it. A sheet that crosses a window is still one purchased sheet; the opening is removed from usable geometry rather than from a square-foot formula.
Auto compares a horizontal run (long edge along the wall) with a vertical run and recommends the lower planning score. The score considers sheet count, waste area, seam length, narrow leftover strips and edges that miss the framing grid. That is a layout preference, not a building-code requirement.
Room mode and single-wall mode
Many searches start with one wall: how should this 12 by 8 foot partition be hung? Single-wall mode is the low-friction entry. Room mode generates Wall A, Wall B, Wall C, Wall D and the ceiling from width, length and height so the material total covers the whole enclosure.
Each surface has its own bottom-left origin. Layout is computed in 2D and reused for the on-screen plan, SVG and PDF.
A practical example
On a 12 by 8 foot wall with 4 by 8 foot sheets and no openings, a vertical hang uses three full sheets. A horizontal hang uses four sheets and leaves two 4-foot cuts. Auto therefore recommends vertical for that wall. Add a 36 by 80 inch door and the same engine still buys the sheets that the door cuts through; it does not pretend the opening returns a full sheet to stock.
BuildPlot provides planning estimates and layout assistance. Actual installation requirements depend on framing, product specifications, local building codes, fire-rated assemblies, site conditions and manufacturer instructions. The current planner supports rectangular rooms and single walls. Current limitations: it does not check fire ratings, reuse offcuts across walls, or replace a contractor takeoff.

Drywall planning FAQ
How many drywall sheets do I need?
Generate the layout for your actual wall or room dimensions and sheet size. Then add the 5, 10 or 15 percent purchase allowance. Do not rely on square footage divided by 32 when openings and orientation change the cut count.
Should I hang drywall horizontally or vertically?
It depends on the wall and sheet size. Compare both strategies on the same surface. Auto picks the lower planning score; you can override it.
Does a window reduce the sheet count?
Not by itself. A sheet that the window cuts through is still purchased. The opening is subtracted from usable area and shown as a cut.
Is this a building-code checker?
No. Framing spacing, fire-rated assemblies and fastener schedules must follow the product and the local code. The planner records your assumptions.
